Autism + ADHD Assessments for Adults
Understanding yourself can change everything.
If you've been wondering whether ADHD or autism might explain some of your experiences, you're not alone.
Many of the adults we meet have spent years feeling like they're somehow different. Perhaps you've always felt like life seems harder than it looks for everyone else. Maybe you've learnt to mask, push through or adapt so well that others don't see the effort it takes. Or perhaps someone in your life was recently diagnosed, and you're beginning to recognise parts of yourself in their story.
Whatever has brought you here, you deserve answers that feel thoughtful, compassionate and grounded in evidence.
At State of Being, our assessments are about more than reaching a diagnosis. They're an opportunity to better understand yourself, make sense of experiences that may have felt confusing for years and move forward with greater clarity, confidence and self-compassion.
We understand that pursuing an assessment can feel exciting, validating and daunting all at once.
That's why we take a warm, collaborative and neuroaffirming approach. Rather than looking for what's "wrong," we're interested in understanding how your brain works, the strengths you've developed, the challenges you've experienced and how these have shaped your life.
Whether you receive a diagnosis or not, our goal is for you to leave with a deeper understanding of yourself and practical recommendations to support your next steps.
Our Approach
-
Every assessment begins with a 50-minute intake appointment.
This session gives us the opportunity to get to know you, understand what has led you to seek an assessment and discuss whether a formal ADHD and/or autism assessment is likely to be the right next step.
We'll also explain the assessment process, answer any questions you have and recommend any screening questionnaires and psychometric tools to complete before your assessment that might help us get a deeper understanding of you.
This is a great starting point for if you arenβt sure about committing to the full assessment.
-
Depending on your needs/goals, we'll complete an ADHD assessment, an autism assessment or a combined assessment.
The assessment itself is usually more like a series of thoughtful conversations than a test. Your psychologist will take the time to explore your current experiences, your developmental history and the ways your strengths and challenges have shown up throughout your life. We'll also use evidence-based assessment tools and questionnaires to help build a comprehensive understanding of your experiences.
Many people worry that they won't remember enough about their childhood or that they don't have access to school reports or someone who has known them since they were young. Please don't let this stop you from seeking an assessment. While this information can be helpful when it's available, it's not always possible, and we'll work with whatever information you have. Throughout the process, we'll guide you with questions and help piece together the picture collaboratively.
Our aim isn't simply to determine whether you meet diagnostic criteria. It's to understand your unique experiences, recognise both your strengths and challenges, and help you make sense of your story in a way that feels validating, meaningful and useful.
-
Once your assessment is complete, we'll meet with you to talk through the outcome together.
You'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, explore what the findings mean for you and discuss practical strategies and recommendations moving forward.
Following your assessment, you'll receive a Diagnostic Outcome Letter summarising the outcome of your assessment along with personalised recommendations.
If you require a comprehensive diagnostic report for workplace, university or other purposes, this can also be arranged for an additional fee.

Not Sure if an Assessment is Right for You?
That's completely okay.
Many people aren't sure whether they're experiencing ADHD, autism, something else entirely or simply navigating a particularly challenging season of life. It's also common to wonder whether you're "overthinking it" or whether your experiences are significant enough to warrant an assessment.
If you're feeling uncertain, we recommend starting with an Assessment Intake Session.
During this appointment, we'll take the time to understand what's been bringing you here, explore your concerns and discuss whether a comprehensive assessment feels like the right next step for you.
There's absolutely no obligation to proceed with a formal assessment afterwards. In fact, it's important to us that we provide an honest, thoughtful opinion. If we don't believe a comprehensive assessment is likely to be beneficial, we'll tell you, explain why, and discuss other options that may better meet your needs.
